How it works
Accented letters are split into a base letter and its accent marks with Unicode NFD normalization, then the Latin, Greek and Cyrillic accent marks are removed.
Letters that are not accented forms get an explicit swap: ß to ss, æ to ae, œ to oe, ø to o, ł to l, đ and ð to d, þ to th, and dotless ı to i.
Capital Æ and Þ become Ae and Th before lowercase letters, and AE and TH in all-caps words.
Scripts such as Hindi, Arabic, Chinese, Japanese and Korean are left unchanged, because their marks are part of the letters.
