How to use the headline capitalizer

  1. Type or paste your headlines into the Headlines, one per line box.
  2. Choose AP, Chicago, APA or MLA in Style guide.
  3. Press Run.
  4. Press Copy result to use the capitalized titles.

How it works

All four styles capitalize the first and last word and the first word after a colon. AP and APA lowercase articles and conjunctions and prepositions of three letters or fewer, such as if, as and to, so they give the same result for most titles.

Chicago lowercases articles, every preposition in the built-in list, and and, but, for, or and nor. MLA does the same and also lowercases so and yet. Both capitalize if.

Hyphenated words get each part capitalized unless that part is a small word, as in Step-by-Step. In Chicago, a part after a prefix such as anti or non stays lowercase.

Words that already have capitals inside them, such as NASA or iPhone, are left as typed. A line in all capitals is lowered first.

The tool cannot tell when a word like up or over is used as an adverb, so check phrasal verbs such as Give Up by hand.

Everything runs in your browser. Your input is not uploaded or stored.

Questions and answers

Which words are not capitalized in a title?

Most styles lowercase articles (a, an, the), short conjunctions like and and or, and prepositions, unless they are the first or last word. The exact list depends on the style guide.

What is the difference between AP and Chicago title case?

AP capitalizes prepositions of four or more letters, such as With and From. Chicago lowercases prepositions of any length.

Can I capitalize many titles at once?

Yes. Put one title on each line and every line is converted.
