How it works
Adding tax: tax = price x rate, rounded to the cent, and total = price + tax.
Extracting tax: price before tax = total / (1 + rate), rounded to the cent, and the tax is the difference.
You enter the rate; the tool does not look up state or city rates. Rates from 0% to 30% are accepted.
Local rules on rounding and which items are taxed vary, so a register may differ by a cent.
Everything runs in your browser. Your input is not uploaded or stored.
Questions and answers
How do I calculate sales tax?
Multiply the price by the tax rate as a decimal. At 8.25%, a $100 item has $8.25 tax for a $108.25 total.
How do I find the price before tax from a total?
Divide the total by 1 plus the tax rate. $108.25 / 1.0825 = $100.00.
Does this know my local tax rate?
No. Enter the combined rate for your area, which you can find on your state or city tax website or a receipt.
