How to use the credit card payoff calculator

  1. Under Solve for, choose Months to pay off with a fixed payment or Payment needed for a target time.
  2. Enter the Card balance and APR.
  3. Enter the Monthly payment or the Target months to match your choice, then press Run.
  4. Press Copy result to keep the plan.

How it works

Each month, interest of APR / 12 on the balance is added and rounded to the cent, then your payment is subtracted.

A payment that does not cover the first month's interest is rejected because the balance would never fall. Plans longer than 50 years are also rejected.

Target mode uses the standard level payment for 1 to 360 months, rounded to the cent, with a final payment that clears the rest.

It assumes no new charges or fees. Card issuers usually compute interest daily, so actual totals will differ slightly.

Everything runs in your browser. Your input is not uploaded or stored.

Questions and answers

How long will it take to pay off my credit card?

Enter the balance, APR and your fixed monthly payment. The tool counts the months until the balance reaches zero and totals the interest.

Why does a small payment take so long?

Most of a small payment goes to interest. If the payment barely covers the interest, very little reduces the balance each month.

I have several cards. Which should I pay first?

This tool handles one card. For several debts with avalanche or snowball ordering, use the debt payoff calculator.
