Method: Linear interpolation (R-7, Excel PERCENTILE.INC)
Position 9.1 of 10, between 45 and 50
Count: 10, minimum 12, maximum 50

Percentile rank of 30:
Below it: 5 of 10 (50%)
At or below it: 6 of 10 (60%)
Midpoint rank, (below + half of equal) / count: 55%

How it works

Linear interpolation matches Excel PERCENTILE.INC and R type 7: the position is (n - 1) x p / 100 + 1 in the sorted list, with interpolation between neighbors.

Nearest rank picks the value at rank ceiling(p / 100 x n). The exclusive method matches Excel PERCENTILE.EXC, which uses position (n + 1) x p / 100 and rejects percentiles too close to 0 or 100 for the data size.

Percentile rank shows the share of values below, at or below, and a midpoint rank that counts half of the equal values.

Up to 10,000 numbers are allowed. Thousands separators such as 1,000 are rejected so they are not split into two numbers.

Questions and answers

Why do different tools give different percentiles?

There are several accepted definitions. Excel PERCENTILE.INC, PERCENTILE.EXC and nearest rank can give different answers for small data sets, so pick the one your class or software uses.

What is the difference between a percentile and a percentile rank?

A percentile is a value from the data, such as the score at the 90th percentile. A percentile rank is the share of the data at or below a given value.

Why does the exclusive method give an error?

PERCENTILE.EXC only works between 100 / (n + 1) and 100n / (n + 1). With 4 values that is 20 to 80.
