How to use the average calculator

  1. Type or paste your numbers in the Numbers box, such as 10, 20, 30, 40.
  2. Separate them with commas, spaces, semicolons or new lines. A single column of numbers copied from a spreadsheet works.
  3. Press Run to see Count, Sum and Mean.
  4. Press Copy result or Download to save the summary.

How it works

Mean = sum of all the numbers / how many numbers there are.

Accepts up to 5,000 numbers and 40,000 characters. Numbers may use a decimal point or e notation, such as 2.5e3.

Uses standard floating point math with compensated summation to reduce rounding error, and shows results to 12 significant digits.

Each nonzero number must be between 1e-100 and 1e100 in size. Words and currency symbols are rejected.

Do not use commas as thousands separators. A comma splits numbers, so 1,000 is read as 1 and 0.

Everything runs in your browser. Your input is not uploaded or stored.

Questions and answers

How do you calculate the average?

Add all the numbers, then divide by how many there are. For 10, 20, 30 and 40, the sum is 100 and the count is 4, so the average is 25.

Is the average the same as the mean?

Usually, yes. In everyday use, average means the arithmetic mean. The median is another kind of average and has its own tool.

Can I paste numbers from Excel or Google Sheets?

Yes, if you copy only cells that hold numbers. Each cell lands on its own line, and new lines are valid separators.

Why does 1,000 give a strange result?

Commas separate numbers here, so 1,000 is read as two numbers, 1 and 000. Type large numbers without thousands separators, like 1000.
