How it works
Results are exact fractions in lowest terms, never rounded decimals. A whole-number result is shown without a denominator, such as 2.
Each value can be a fraction like -3/4, a decimal like 0.5, or e notation like 1.2e-3. The top and bottom of a fraction can be decimals too, as in 1.5/2.
Mixed numbers such as 1 1/2 are not accepted. Write them as improper fractions, such as 3/2.
Improper results stay improper, so 3/4 + 3/4 shows as 3/2.
A zero denominator, or dividing by zero, is rejected with an error.
Everything runs in your browser. Your input is not uploaded or stored.
Questions and answers
How do you add fractions with different denominators?
Rewrite both over a common denominator, then add the numerators. 2/3 + 1/4 becomes 8/12 + 3/12 = 11/12.
How do you divide fractions?
Flip the second fraction and multiply. 2/3 divided by 1/4 is 2/3 x 4/1 = 8/3.
Does the calculator simplify the answer?
Yes. Every result is reduced by the greatest common divisor of its top and bottom, so 6/8 becomes 3/4.
Can I get the answer as a decimal?
This tool returns a fraction. Paste the result into the fraction to decimal tool to convert it.
