  2. Pick 6, 12, 20 or 40 places under Decimal places.
  3. Press Run. The result is labeled Exact decimal or Rounded to your chosen number of places.

How it works

The tool divides the top number by the bottom number using whole-number arithmetic, so there is no floating point error.

If the decimal ends within your chosen places, the result says Exact decimal. Otherwise it says Rounded to N decimal places.

Rounding goes to the nearest digit, and exact halves round away from zero. Trailing zeros are removed.

Repeating decimals are rounded, not shown with a repeat bar. For example, 1/3 at 6 places is 0.333333.

A zero denominator is rejected. Each part of the fraction can have up to 80 digits.

Everything runs in your browser. Your input is not uploaded or stored.

Questions and answers

How do you convert a fraction to a decimal?

Divide the numerator, the top number, by the denominator, the bottom number. 3/8 means 3 divided by 8, which is 0.375.

Why does 1/3 not give an exact decimal?

1/3 is 0.3333... with 3s that never end. Any fraction in lowest terms whose denominator has a prime factor other than 2 or 5 repeats forever, so the tool rounds it.

What is 2/3 as a decimal?

It is 0.6666... repeating. Rounded to 6 places, this tool shows 0.666667.

Can I enter an improper fraction or a negative?

Yes. 7/4 gives 1.75 and -1/8 gives -0.125.
