Base32 encoder

This Base32 encoder converts text into Base32, which writes bytes using only capital letters and digits. Developers meet Base32 in two-factor authentication secrets, file names and systems that cannot tell upper and lower case apart.

How to use the base32 encoder

  1. Type or paste text into the Text to encode box.
  2. Pick an Alphabet: Base32 or Base32hex.
  3. Pick a Padding option: Keep = padding or Omit padding.
  4. Press Run, then Copy result or Download.

How it works

Your text is converted to UTF-8 bytes, and every 5 bytes become 8 Base32 characters.

Standard Base32 uses A to Z and 2 to 7. Base32hex uses 0 to 9 and A to V, which keeps the sort order of the original bytes.

Padding adds = signs so the length is a multiple of 8. Some systems, such as authenticator app secrets, leave it out.

Base32 is an encoding, not encryption, and the output is about 60% longer than the input in bytes. Input is limited to 500,000 characters.

Everything runs in your browser. Your input is not uploaded or stored.

Questions and answers

What is Base32 used for?

It is common for two-factor authentication secrets, because the characters are easy to read and type, and anywhere upper and lower case may get mixed up.

What is the difference between Base32 and Base64?

Base64 uses 64 characters and makes shorter output. Base32 uses 32 characters that do not depend on letter case, so it is longer but harder to garble.

Is Base32 encryption?

No. Anyone can decode it, so it does not hide information.

Is my text uploaded?

No. It runs in your browser, and nothing you paste is sent to a server.
