Hex encoder

This hex encoder shows the bytes behind your text as pairs of hexadecimal digits, so café becomes 63 61 66 c3 a9. Developers use it to debug encoding problems, build test data and compare bytes across systems.

How to use the hex encoder

  1. Enter text in the Text to encode box.
  2. Set Byte separator to Spaces or No separator.
  3. Set Hexadecimal letters to Lowercase or Uppercase.
  4. Press Run and use Copy result or Download to keep the hex.

How it works

Text is encoded as UTF-8, and every byte becomes exactly two hex digits.

ASCII characters take one byte, while accented letters and emoji take two to four, so the output can be longer than you expect.

Spaces puts one space between bytes. No separator returns one continuous string.

No 0x prefix is added to the output.

Input with a lone surrogate code unit, usually a cut-off emoji, is refused with an error.

Everything runs in your browser. Your input is not uploaded or stored.

Questions and answers

Is hex encoding a kind of encryption?

No. Hex is just another way to write the same bytes, and anyone can turn it back into text.

Why does é become two bytes?

In UTF-8, characters outside basic ASCII use more than one byte. The letter é is stored as c3 a9.

How do I convert hex back to text?

Use the hex decoder. It accepts both the spaced and the unspaced output of this tool.

Is my text uploaded?

No. The conversion runs in your browser.
