Data storage converter
File sizes come in two systems. Decimal units like MB and GB use powers of 1,000, while binary units like MiB and GiB use powers of 1,024. This converter switches between them, which helps when a drive, a download page and your computer each report a different number.

How to use the data storage converter
- Type a value of zero or greater, such as 1.
- Choose the starting unit in From, such as Gibibytes (GiB).
- Choose the target unit in To, such as Megabytes (MB).
- Press Run to see the size in the new unit, then Copy result or Download.
How it works
Decimal units: bytes (B), kilobytes (kB), megabytes (MB), gigabytes (GB) and terabytes (TB). Each step is 1,000.
Binary units: kibibytes (KiB), mebibytes (MiB), gibibytes (GiB) and tebibytes (TiB). Each step is 1,024.
Bits are not listed here. One byte is eight bits, and the bandwidth converter handles bits.
Results show up to 12 significant digits. Negative numbers, commas and unit text in the box are rejected.
Everything runs in your browser. Your input is not uploaded or stored.
Questions and answers
How many bytes are in a megabyte?
A decimal megabyte (MB) is 1,000,000 bytes. A mebibyte (MiB) is 1,048,576 bytes.
What is the difference between GB and GiB?
A GB is 1,000,000,000 bytes and a GiB is 1,073,741,824 bytes. So 1 GiB equals about 1.074 GB.
Why does my 1 TB drive show about 931 GB?
The drive maker counts 1 TB as 10^12 bytes, but many systems divide by 1,024 three times and label the result GB. That gives about 931 GiB.
Is a kilobyte 1,000 or 1,024 bytes?
In this tool, kB means 1,000 bytes and KiB means 1,024 bytes, following the standard SI and IEC names.
