Bandwidth converter

Internet plans are sold in bits per second, but download windows often show bytes per second. This converter switches between the two so you can compare a plan's speed with what you actually see. Gamers, IT staff and anyone shopping for internet service can use it.

How to use the bandwidth converter

  1. Type a speed of zero or greater, such as 100.
  2. Choose the starting unit in From, such as Megabits per second (Mbit/s).
  3. Choose the target unit in To, such as Megabytes per second (MB/s).
  4. Press Run, then use Copy result to paste the speed elsewhere, or Download it.

How it works

Bit rates: bit/s, kbit/s, Mbit/s and Gbit/s.

Byte rates: B/s, kB/s, MB/s and GB/s.

One byte is eight bits, and k, M and G mean 1,000, 1,000,000 and 1,000,000,000.

Binary rates like MiB/s are not included.

Negative speeds give an error, and results show up to 12 significant digits.

Everything runs in your browser. Your input is not uploaded or stored.

Questions and answers

How do I convert Mbps to MB/s?

Divide by 8, because one byte is eight bits. So 100 Mbps equals 12.5 MB/s.

Is 1 Gbps the same as 1,000 Mbps?

Yes. In network speeds, the G and M prefixes are decimal, so 1 Gbps is 1,000 Mbps.

What does a lowercase b versus uppercase B mean?

A lowercase b means bits and an uppercase B means bytes. Mixing them up gives an answer that is off by eight times.

How fast is 1 Gbps in MB/s?

1 Gbps equals 125 MB/s at the ideal rate.
