Adding $5,000 each year changes the time to the target from 20 years to 19 years, 1 year sooner. Projected investments go from $100,000 today to $1,257,308 after 20 years.
How to use this tool
- Enter retirement spending, invested assets and annual contributions.
- Choose a real return after inflation and an annual withdrawal rate.
- Compare the target, projected age, Coast FIRE amount and changes under other assumptions.
How we calculate it
The financial independence target divides yearly spending by the withdrawal rate. Investments grow at a constant annual real return, with contributions added at year end. Whole years are counted until assets reach the target.
Coast savings are the amount needed today to reach the same target by your chosen age without more contributions. Taxes, fees and variations in market returns are excluded.
