Anthropic is discussing another computing agreement with Nscale that could be worth about $45 billion, according to Reuters, which cited a person familiar with the talks on Monday. The proposed arrangement concerns a second building at Nscale's Monarch campus in West Virginia, where the maker of Claude already agreed to rent substantial capacity in August. Reuters report
Reuters said the second building would provide 460 megawatts using Nvidia's Vera Rubin chips. Details could change while discussions continue. Bloomberg first reported the talks. Reuters also reported that Microsoft had withdrawn from a separate Nscale project after power-connection delays. The report does not identify that project as Monarch. September's contract figures describe the filing at that date, rather than a refreshed account of all customer commitments.
The potential purchase would deepen the relationship between a fast-growing AI company and a young infrastructure supplier. It also would put another large customer commitment behind a physical development whose public plans still point to delivery in 2028.
Examining Monarch's power requirements alongside Nscale's existing contract disclosures shows why a signed deal would answer only part of investors' questions.
An existing agreement has delivery conditions
Nscale's September registration statement already describes Anthropic agreements signed August 25 with aggregate payments of up to approximately $44.6 billion. Those payments depend on delivery and service availability. The filing also describes Microsoft agreements worth up to approximately $43.8 billion, excluding optional extensions. Nscale registration statement
Together, the stated amounts total $88.4 billion. Against Nscale's reported total contract value of $103.4 billion, they represent about 85.5%. That arithmetic describes the concentration of disclosed commitments, not the companies' share of current revenue or profit.
Adding a potential $45 billion agreement to $44.6 billion produces $89.6 billion. That is a conditional sum of an existing disclosed amount and a reported negotiation. Until terms are signed and disclosed, it should not be presented as Nscale's updated backlog or money Anthropic has paid.
The distinction affects how investors assess an infrastructure company. A multiyear customer commitment can support financing and construction. Revenue arrives as the company provides the contracted service. Equipment purchases, borrowing costs and operations must be funded along the way, while delays can postpone service.
The campus sells a power plan as well as computing
Nscale's current Monarch page describes a first phase engineered for 1.35 gigawatts of AI computing capacity, with delivery targeted by early 2028. The site covers more than 2,250 acres in Mason County and has an expansion path beyond eight gigawatts. The company lists more than $20 billion in planned capital investment. These are development plans, not installed operating capacity. Monarch project page
The reported second building's 460 megawatts would equal roughly 34% of that first-phase computing figure. This comparison describes scale; public information does not establish that the two numbers use identical engineering boundaries or that the second building sits entirely within the published first-phase schedule.
Nscale obtained Monarch through its agreement to acquire American Intelligence & Power Corporation, announced in March. The acquisition also established an energy division led by Daniel Shapiro. Its announcement described initial onsite power capacity of two gigawatts expected in the first half of 2028, followed by expansion toward eight gigawatts in 2031. Acquisition announcement
Power capacity and computing capacity describe different parts of the project. Electricity must also operate cooling, networking and other equipment. The published two-gigawatt power plan and 1.35-gigawatt computing plan should therefore retain their original labels, rather than be substituted for each other.
Josh Payne, Nscale's chief executive, explained the geographic choice in March: “AI infrastructure needs to be built where demand is.” His company is taking responsibility for developing both energy supply and computing infrastructure at the campus, which brings construction and operating dependencies into the same expansion program.
Caterpillar's January announcement provides another milestone to track. It said Monarch's developer had ordered two gigawatts of natural-gas generator sets, with deliveries scheduled from September 2026 through August 2027, supplemented by battery storage. The announcement describes equipment orders and expected commissioning, rather than confirming the equipment has arrived or begun producing power. Those supplier milestones can help readers follow progress before the campus's computing capacity starts serving customers. Caterpillar announcement
A regional comparison makes the demand easier to see
A megawatt measures power at a point in time. Electricity consumed over a year is measured in megawatt-hours. If a 460-megawatt load ran continuously for a year, it would consume about 4.03 million megawatt-hours, or 4.03 terawatt-hours.
For context, West Virginia's total retail electricity sales were approximately 32.99 million megawatt-hours in 2024, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration. The illustrative building load would equal about 12.2% of that historical annual total. Actual use would depend on utilization and the precise meaning of the reported power figure. This comparison does not predict electricity purchases from the state's existing retail grid. EIA state profile
Nscale's onsite-power proposal is particularly relevant to that last distinction. A campus generating power through its own microgrid can have a different relationship with utilities from a facility relying entirely on a conventional grid connection. Public promises still need to become completed generation, reliable distribution and working computing equipment.
The International Energy Agency's 2025 analysis projected that data centers would account for almost half of U.S. electricity-demand growth through 2030. The agency identified uncertainty around adoption, efficiency and energy bottlenecks. Those are national forecasts, not an independent validation of Monarch's timetable. IEA analysis
Anthropic is buying different routes to capacity
Anthropic has separately expanded its relationship with Amazon. In April, it announced more than $100 billion in AWS technology commitments over 10 years and access to as much as five gigawatts of additional capacity. That agreement spans Amazon's Trainium chips, which differ from the Nvidia equipment described in the Nscale talks. Anthropic announcement
Anthropic said growing use of Claude was putting pressure on reliability and performance during busy periods. Its arrangements therefore serve two related tasks: developing future models and supplying responses when customers use existing ones. Their hardware, delivery dates and contract periods must be examined separately before amounts are combined.
A second Nscale agreement would strengthen the commercial case for expanding Monarch, if completed. The next documents to examine are the signed terms, revised construction schedule and financing disclosures. They can establish when Anthropic receives usable equipment, which payments depend on that delivery and who bears the cost if the schedule slips.
Common questions
Has the new $45 billion agreement been signed?
Reuters described talks, with terms still subject to change. The reported second-building negotiation should remain separate from Anthropic’s existing disclosed agreement. Reuters report
What is the existing Anthropic commitment?
Up to $44.6 billion, conditional on delivery and availability. Registration statement
Where is Monarch?
Nscale locates the campus in Mason County, West Virginia, and targets its first phase for early 2028. Monarch plan
When were Monarch’s generators scheduled to arrive?
Caterpillar’s January announcement scheduled natural-gas generator deliveries from September 2026 through August 2027. Those dates describe the purchase plan, rather than confirmation that equipment arrived. Caterpillar release
Why does the plan include batteries?
Caterpillar says battery storage will help handle rapid changes in data-center electricity demand alongside the gas generators. Caterpillar release
How quickly can the proposed generators respond?
Caterpillar says its G3516 platform can go from zero to full load in approximately seven seconds. Actual campus operation also depends on installation and controls. Caterpillar release
How much energy is 460 megawatts over a year?
Continuous operation for 8,760 hours would use about 4.03 terawatt-hours. That calculation assumes full load throughout a non-leap year. EIA comparison data
Why compare that calculation with West Virginia?
It illustrates scale against the state’s published annual electricity sales. It does not predict Monarch’s grid purchases or eventual operating load. EIA state data
How large is the wider U.S. electricity challenge?
The IEA’s April 2025 forecast assigned data centers almost half of U.S. electricity-demand growth through 2030. That is a national forecast, not a Monarch operating measurement. IEA forecast
What capacity has Anthropic arranged with Amazon?
Its April agreement described up to five gigawatts of new capacity, including nearly one gigawatt of Trainium2 and Trainium3 capacity expected by the end of 2026. Anthropic agreement
